Our History
Old D.C. Charm, New Age Energy
1428 U Street NW, originally known as the Marden Building, has a rich history dating back to its beginnings as a paper factory in 1909. Over the years, it has become a home to several notable tenants and businesses, each contributing to its unique character.
One of the most celebrated occupants of 1428 U was the globally recognized artist, Sam Gilliam. For over two decades, Gilliam utilized the space as his studio, where he created his famous draped, color-drenched canvases. His work propelled him from the local D.C. art scene onto the global stage during the early 1970s.
Additionally, 1428 U has housed Gronning Architecture, a reputable architectural firm based in Washington DC, for over 25 years. Upon 1428 U’s acquisition by EJF Real Estate Services in the early 2000s, Gronning Architecture was enlisted to redesign the building, giving it a contemporary update while preserving its historical charm.
Goodwood, an antique shop, has been a staple at 1428 U since 1994, adding a touch of design and style to the 14th and U Street corridor. They offer a diverse collection of antique furniture and home furnishings, appealing to a wide range of tastes.
EJF Real Estate Services, purchased the building from Sam Gilliam in the early 2000’s, and has established a presence on the second floor since then. They are a leading property management company in DC and have expanded their services to include EJF Rentals, EJF Plumbing and Maintenance, and FinancialsPlus+.
The enduring legacy of 1428 U Street NW is a testament to its significance, strategic location, and the appeal of the well-maintained historical structure, boasting original hardwood floors and exposed brick.
